Sophia Hunt
SOPRANO
Brazilian American soprano Sophia Hunt's
performances have been praised as "trenchant”
and “vocally skilled" (Opera News), "exceptionally
strong both vocally and dramatically" (Parterre
Box), and "vibrant and musically intelligent" (Broad
Street Review).
She was the top prize winner in the 2023 Gerda
Lissner Foundation International Vocal Competition
and the 2023 Orpheus Vocal Competition, and
a national semifinalist in the 2022 Metropolitan
Opera Laffont Competition.
This season Sophia sings Second Niece in Peter Grimes, Second Woman/First
Witch/Spirit in Dido and Aeneas, and returns as the Soprano in The Four-Note
Opera with Dutch National Opera. In her first year with the company, she also
performed the roles of Erste Dame (Die Zauberflöte), Nella (Gianni Schicchi), and
Suor Dolcina (Suor Angelica), as well as covered Violetta (La traviata). Her past
roles include Donna Anna and Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni), Fioridiligi (Così fan
tutte), Vitellia (La clemenza di Tito), and Faith in Rene Orth’s Empty the House. In
2022, she was a studio artist with Wolf Trap Opera, where she sang Mrs. Gleaton
in Susannah and covered Violetta in La traviata.
Sophia is passionate about concert and recital work and makes her debut with
the Netherlands Philharmonic this season. She has recently sung with Opera
Philadelphia, Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, City Choir of Washington,
Curtis on Tour, Main Line Symphony Orchestra, and the Art Song Preservation
Society of New York. She was a fellow at the Aspen Music Festival and has
participated in the Joyce DiDonato master classes at Carnegie Hall, Houston
Grand Opera’s YAVA, and SongFest. Sophia is from New York City and is a graduate
of the Curtis Institute of Music.
